Ketch and Mailchimp

Delete a list member permanently, not in a way that leaves them re-importable the next time a list gets synced.

Mailchimp

About Mailchimp

Mailchimp manages contacts, campaigns, and audience data for a huge range of businesses, and one detail matters more than it might seem: how deletion actually behaves. A deletion that's reversible, or that leaves a contact re-importable from an old export, doesn't really satisfy what a person asked for when they exercised a deletion right.

Ketch connects to Mailchimp with deletion built to actually be permanent.

Capabilities

How Ketch works with Mailchimp

The Ketch Mailchimp integration covers Rights Orchestration (Right to Delete, Right to Access) and Consent Orchestration.

Rights Orchestration

Right to Access returns information about a member, including which lists they're on, their tags, and their activity. Right to Delete removes all personally identifiable information tied to a list member and removes them from the list entirely, in a way that makes it impossible to re-import that list member afterward.

Consent Orchestration

Works through a combined tag-and-status mechanism: when someone opts out of a purpose, Ketch creates and applies a `Ketch_purpose_optout` tag to their record and updates their status across every list to "unsubscribed." Opting back in removes the tag and restores their subscribed status. The opt-out tag only protects someone if campaigns actually exclude it, so it needs to be actively used in campaign targeting, not just applied and forgotten.

With Ketch, teams can

  • Delete a list member permanently, in a way that prevents re-importing them from an old list export
  • Apply a purpose-specific opt-out tag automatically, ready to exclude from campaign targeting
  • Fulfill Right to Access requests that include list membership, tags, and activity data together

The gap

The problem this integration solves

A marketing platform's own deletion mechanics matter as much as whether deletion happens at all:

01. A deletion that leaves a contact re-importable from an old list export doesn't actually satisfy what a genuine deletion right requires

02. An opt-out tag that exists but isn't actively excluded from campaign targeting doesn't protect anyone, no matter how correctly it's applied

03. Manually tracking which list members have opted out across every list doesn't scale to real preference volume

Ketch resolves the first by using Mailchimp's genuinely permanent deletion mechanism, and flags the second clearly since the tag's value depends entirely on active use in campaigns.

Why Ketch

Why teams choose Ketch for Mailchimp privacy compliance

Permissioning infrastructure that governs Mailchimp the same way it governs every other system in your stack — not a one-off connector bolted onto a banner.

  • Deletion that's actually permanent

Right to Delete removes personal information in a way that prevents the list member from being re-imported later.

  • A tag built for real campaign exclusion

The opt-out tag and unsubscribed status work together, ready to use directly in Mailchimp's own targeting tools.

  • Backed by enforcement precedent

The California Attorney General reached a $1.55 million settlement with Healthline Media over sharing sensitive data with advertisers without valid consent, a reminder that email marketing platforms carry real exposure when opt-out mechanisms exist but aren't genuinely enforced in campaign targeting.
