The Consent Management Platform, reimagined as agentic privacy infrastructure

Consent management is the practice of capturing, storing, and honoring a person's choices about how their personal data is collected, used, and shared. It covers everything from the first prompt a person sees, like a cookie banner, to enforcing that choice consistently across every system that touches their data.

A consent management platform (CMP) is software that automates consent management: it displays privacy notices, records what a person agrees to, and communicates that choice to every connected tool, script, or vendor so it's enforced everywhere, not just on the page where it was collected.

A CMP collects a person's privacy choices, stores them as an auditable record, and syncs those choices to the tags, vendors, and systems that use personal data — blocking or allowing collection to match what the person actually agreed to.

A CMP detects a visitor's jurisdiction, shows a banner or notice with the choices required by law there, and captures the response. That response is written to a central record, then pushed out through APIs or tag manager integrations so every downstream system, from analytics to ad platforms, respects the same permission in real time.

Consent management is important because most privacy laws — GDPR, CPRA, LGPD, and dozens of U.S. state laws — require documented, revocable permission before certain data uses are allowed. Beyond legal exposure, it builds user trust: people share more data with companies that give them clear, honored control over it.

At minimum, a CMP needs to detect the applicable jurisdiction and law, present compliant choices (opt-in vs. opt-out depending on region), record consent in an auditable format, propagate that choice to every connected system, and update automatically as regulations change.
